Time to Change the Clocks!

Bridget | October 23, 2020

Time to change the clocks

As it is time to change the clocks this weekend, I can’t help but think this time has arrived very quickly this year.

Every year I reflect on a few things to remember to do at the same time as changing the clocks. This year though I can’t quite believe it’s that time already.

2020 might have been a very different year in so many ways to the last few; but boy, have the last few months gone quickly…

Changing times

This October as every year, the seasons are changing, the leaves are falling and the days are getting shorter. As we change the clocks this weekend, it’s time again to remember to carry out a few other checks around the home, office and car that keep us all safe too.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

This is a great time to make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. While you’re there, if you don’t change the batteries – check the types of batteries they take and make sure you have replacements on hand.

Exterior lights and pathways

Spend an extra few minutes checking your outdoor lights are work properly. While you are outside, check the paths and other areas to see if they need any extra attention. At this time of year accidents relating to slips, trips and falls and lack of light can increase. A little care could prevent that unwanted accident.

First Aid Kits

At home, at work and in your car, you should always have a first aid kit on hand. It’s easy to forget how many plasters you’ve used or bandages you’ve given to family members, friends and colleagues. Taking a little time to do a quick audit of what you need to replace, or what might have expired use by dates will help you out in the long run.

Car Tyres

While it is recommend you check your tyres before every journey, we know many people don’t. However long it’s been since you last checked the pressure and tread of your tyres, add it to your check list for this Sunday. You don’t want your tyres to let you down when you most need them.

Preparing for the unexpected

Keeping a coat or blanket in the boot of your car will keep you warm should you break down or end up in a lengthy traffic jam. Keeping a torch to hand can also come in very handy during winter months.

It’s not just motorists who need to be careful on the roads, but motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians too. With fewer streetlights around, leaves falling on roads and paths and icy patches forming; it’s all too easy for vehicles to skid and lose control. Or for pedestrians to slip and hurt themselves. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) advises motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians to wear bright-coloured or fluorescent clothing after dark as they, and we, believe that if you are seen, you are more likely to be safe.

If you make any other checks at this time of year, let us know. We’d love to hear what you do to keep everyone safe and healthy.
