In celebration of International Woman’s Day today, we thought we’d recognise the truly inspirational Tropic Skincare founder, Susie Ma. Thanks to her amazing drive and determination since she was just 15, Susie has made it onto the Forbes 30 under 30 Europe in Retail and Ecommerce list this year.
We’ve chosen to celebrate Susie today as we love her company’s ethos and the totally natural skincare and makeup products Tropic sells. While listening to Susie speak in January, her passion was clear. She grew up in North Queensland with her mum and grandma, surrounded by the ingredients that now make up her products. As a chemist, her grandma knew about side effects of chemicals and encouraged the family to lead a natural lifestyle, which included natural beauty products.
Susie moved to England and continued to nourish her body and skin with natural products. In 2004, when she was just 15, Susie made a big batch of her first product, rented a pitch at Greenwich Market and took home £980! She re-invested her profits and kept selling at the market every weekend and throughout the school holidays.
While studying at university, Susie still managed to dedicate time to research developing products, as well as the wider beauty industry. After graduating, Susie appeared on the BBC’s Apprentice in 2011 and made it to the final. Although missing out on the win, Lord Alan Sugar was so impressed with Susie and her business plan, that he became a 50/50 partner of Tropic Skincare. In 2013, the business was established, and already a long way from the kitchen table where Susie made her first products for Greenwich Market.
Readers of this blog may remember we introduced you to Tropic at Hundred Acre back in August 2017. Today, we’re delighted to tell you this little corner of our Hundred Acre world has expanded already! Our team has grown and we’re even more excited about this side of our business.
We live and breathe health and safety, and while traditional safety measures consider the space we work in and the role we have, we know there’s more we can do. Looking closer at the health side of health and safety, we’ve considered exercise, or the lack of it, as well as the food we eat. Now we’re looking at what we use on our bodies too. Did you know that out of the tens of thousands of beauty products out there, 80% of them contain ingredients that can be toxic to our bodies?
Hundred Acre’s founder and director, Bridget Gilmour, says: “Since establishing Hundred Acre in 2008 as my safe place, it’s evolved to be much more than that. The safe place we all know is about far more than traditional health and safety. Looking after people is about more than just physical safety; the impact of all we do at work and beyond on our mental health and general wellbeing for the environment we individually inhabit, as well as all we do to the environment that surrounds us, is huge.
“From the first time I was introduced to Tropic, it felt right, and I was happy for it to be part of Hundred Acre. While listening to Susie speak in January, Tropic became even more of a perfect fit for our Hundred Acre world. When Carlton took to the stage, he spoke of Tropic being a baby and a family; just how I’ve always thought of my safe place. We’re now even more in love with Tropic than we’ve ever been. Products that look nice, smell nice, are kind to us and to the environment, and have a conscience too, as they’re cruelty free. Even better than all of this is they actually work really well!”
In just over a week’s time, there’s a very significant day in the Tropic calendar. March 17th sees the launch of new products for spring and summer 2018, while celebrating the success of the last few months. It’ll be lovely to be with the team we share this Tropic magic with and celebrate together. We can’t wait!
